WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (19-22) held off a feisty South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs (6-22), Saturday for a 3-1 victory. After jumping out to an early 3-0 first inning lead, the Lady Rams held the Lady Bulldogs to just one run to secure the win.
The Lady Rams took advantage of some early pitching struggles by South Carolina State, walking in the first run of the game, followed by a two-RBI single by sophomore outfielder Devyn Gillette that put the Lady Rams on top, 3-0. The Lady Rams held South Carolina State to just one fourth-inning run, which came on an RBI double.
WSSU junior leftfielder Desiree Ramirez had the best day at the plate, going 2-for-3 from the plate with a run scored. Junior pitcher Amber Shore picked up the win for the Lady Rams pitching all seven innings and allowing just five hits and one earned run. She added 10 strikeouts in the loss.
The two teams would square off for game two of the doubleheader later in the day.
