HILTON HEAD, SC - The Winston-Salem State University Rams tennis team finished their spring break competition week in Hilton Head, S.C. with a 7-0 loss to the Bucknell University Bison on Friday evening.  The Rams are now 1-16 overall on the season with the loss while Bucknell improves to 6-3 on the season with the win.

 

In singles, Bucknell's Ryan Sandburg played at the No. 1 position for the second time this week, defeating WSSU's Brian Coxton, 6-3, 7-6 and 7-4 in the tie breaker to make him 5-5 on the season and 2-1 at No. 2.  BU's Jonathan Brenner played at the No. 2 position for the first time this season, winning his match over Maximillian Glodde, 6-1, 6-1 to bring his season record to 6-4. At No. 3, BU freshman Anton Kovic played Ryan Linquist, winning 6-3, 6-1.

 

Freshman Mark Malloy played at No. 4, improving to 6-3 with a win over Troy Moore, 6-0, 6-0. At No. 5, junior Daniel Bednarek made his season debut, topping Patrick Jenkins, 6-0, 6-2, while at No. 6, junior Jamie Watson also made his first appearance this season, picking up a win over Andrew Jones, 6-2, 6-0 as Bucknell cruised out to an early 6-0 lead.

 

In doubles play, senior Ira Reibeisen and Sandburg improved to 6-2, with a win over Coxton and Glodde at No. 1 (8-2). At No. 2, Brenner and Kovic went 8-2 over Moore and Hunter, bringing the duo to 6-2 on the season, while at No. 3, Bednarek and Watson played for the first time this season, picking up a win over Linquist and Jones, 8-2.

 

The Bison swept all seven points from the Rams as WSSU dropped their 14th 7-0 decision of the season.

 

The loss drops the Rams to 1-16 on the year while the Bison improve to 6-3 on the season with the win.

 

The WSSU men return to action on Tuesday, March 18 at 2:00 p.m. as they travel to Norfolk, Virginia to face the Spartans of Norfolk State University.
